Aikido: #1 Release to Sumi Otoshi

This is one of my favorite “trick” techniques, which depends greatly on timing.

We begin with uke making a cross body attack by grapping tori’s right wrist.

Tori responds with #1 release. Make sure you do all the right things, especially unbendable arm. When I teach this to people, unbendable arm is one of the first things to go out the window.

As uke continues his attack, tori allows his left hand to touch uke’s arm in the bend of the elbow.

As uke’s left foot comes forward, tori retards uke’s right side by essentially maintaining uke’s right elbow in its current position. Tori can slightly extend his left hand backward to enhance the effects, but great care should be taken to push parallel to the floor with no downward component.
